About The Ottawa Valley Music Festival

The Ottawa Valley Music Festival (OVMF) is a non-profit charitable corporation which promotes the appreciation of classical music by presenting a series of classical music concerts from April to September each year throughout the Ottawa Valley. The OVMF Concert Series has been presented since 1994 and features the Festival Chorus supported by a professional orchestra and soloists.

The Chorus comprises dedicated, music-loving volunteers who under the direction of our Artistic Director, work together to attain a high level of professionalism and excellence. The choir has enjoyed membership of as many as 90 voices in its early seasons and has now evolved into an ensemble of between 30 and 50 singers for its various performances. Chorus members come together from the many communities of the Ottawa Valley and beyond; our performance season extends from first rehearsals in April to our final concert at the end of September.

Concert repertoire varies from season to season and from concert to concert. The Chorus has performed everything from simple arrangements of folk songs, hymns and anthems through gospel, broadway, popular and contemporary songs to full length masterpieces such as "The Creation" and "The Messiah", as well as smaller works from composers of the Renaissance through to modern times.

The Ottawa Valley Music Festival continues to reach out into the community to reward young musicians through a variety of programs aimed at nurturing talents and supporting a life-time interest in music.

The Ottawa Valley Music Festival Chorus welcomes new members who are able to make a commitment to hard work and high standards of performance. For information on joining the Chorus or to join us as a volunteer please contact chorus [at] ottawavalleymusicfestival [dot] ca .

Conductor Mervin Fick returns to OVMF

Mervin William Fick brings to the role as our Guest Conductor more than 35 years of creative leadership as a choral conductor, vocal coach, voice teacher, and clinician.

His extensive knowledge of choral repertoire, his innovative and varied programming, and his commitment to community outreach have revitalized many community, church, and professional choirs and added scope and depth to their performances. His programming expertise includes an in-depth knowledge of Period Performance Practice for music of the Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical periods.

His dedication to singers' development is enhanced by his expertise and experience in vocal pedagogy. The vitality he brings to his teaching motivates and engages singers, creating a 'culture of learning' that facilitates the mastery of new repertoire.

A strong belief in arts education for young audiences led to his developing and delivering an innovative and successful interactive program of Canadian music, art, and poetry for elementary students.  He also guided the implementation of a Choral Scholars program to give older students the opportunity to study and perform with an adult concert choir.

Mr. Fick directs four concert choirs: MCS Chorus, Toronto Beach Chorale, Brampton PCS Singers, and the award-winning Esprit Chamber Choir. He programs the entire season for each of these choirs, conducts several ticketed concerts yearly, and prepares each choir for frequent guest performances in their respective communities.

A graduate of the University of Toronto Faculty of Music (B.Mus), Mr. Fick has diplomas in both vocal performance and pedagogy from the Royal Conservatory of Music.  He also holds a Diploma and Certificate in Service Playing from the Royal Canadian College of Organists.

He has led a number of choral tours in Europe, successfully showcasing Canadian works.
